Scripture: Psalm 8:1 ESV – “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.”

In Psalm 8, the word “majesty” is used to ascribe supremacy to God. He holds in His hand inherent glory and power. He is sovereign.

We started the week by looking at the sovereignty of God. It is because of His sovereignty that your failures and shortcomings cannot interrupt the mission of God. His grace and majesty make it possible for you to live among unseen spiritual enemies and not be overcome by their threats of hopelessness and despair.

Before you hopefully head off this morning to worship with God’s church, take a moment to fixate your mind on the majesty of God.

Right where you are, countless things are happening at the same time. The clock is ticking—perhaps a little more inconspicuously today than on a Monday. Like clockwork, the sun reappears as it does every other day. Things are quiet, yet the murmurings of past regrets and the tentative hope of a sun rising over new beginnings spark a familiar battle between unbelief and faith.

If your first conversation today is with God instead of your own thoughts, this whole day can be different from others. Instead of swimming against the current of what is holy and righteous, you can rest in surrender to Him, who speaks every ray of sunlight into existence. You can decide now to give Him your fears and receive His peace—to shed the burden of expectations so you can put on the promise of His unconditional love.

Do you know where to begin this conversation with God today?

Follow the example of the Psalmist. Begin by declaring the majesty of God over the frailty of your mind. Place your feet on solid ground as you recognize that you are weak and He is strong. As the screams of hatred ring forth from one corner of the earth to another, immerse yourself in the truth that God is above all of it. His love and justice drown out the panicked efforts of an enemy who knows his threats hold no power if you walk in God’s truth.

With every utterance of adoration and praise for God that springs from your mouth, it is like a spear racing through the heart of darkness. Every word that proclaims Christ’s supremacy is like a bomb destroying the watchtowers of Satan’s minions, who seek every opportunity to destroy you.

John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

The enemy is not just a thief—he is the thief. But he isn’t an ordinary one. If a thief were to steal money from your bank account today, there’s a good chance that, due to built-in protections, your money would be restored, and you could sleep peacefully tonight. But imagine if that same thief refused to rest until he ensured you never saw that money again, simply because he wanted you to be poor. He didn’t steal your money just because he loves wealth—he stole it because he hates your joy.

That’s a whole different level of thievery. That’s who Satan is.

If you are walking under the grace and majesty of God, Satan’s goal is to rob you of every benefit that comes with it. But he has no desire to have what you have in Christ. He doesn’t steal your peace to keep it for himself—he does it because your heartache is his goal. Your hopelessness is the song he would play on a loop because it is music to his ears.

If you want to understand the depths of evil, consider this: Satan aims to steal your heart, then kill you, and then destroy you.

How do you destroy something once you’ve killed it?

Simply put, the enemy isn’t just hanging around to be a nuisance. He is prowling around, seeking to end you—both spiritually and physically.

Knowing this, why would you ever consider stepping out of your “prayer closet” without declaring the majesty of God over your life? The same majesty that radiates God’s beauty is the same majesty that thunders His voice over the earth, driving out every foe that comes against you. The same majesty that is intimately tuned into the hearts of billions of those He loves is the same majesty that holds all the galaxies in the palm of His hand.

Sing praises to the King of kings.
Give honor to the Lord of lords.
Surrender your heart continually to His mercies, which are new every morning.
Declare His majesty and splendor.

Say it so many times that your troubled heart becomes fluent in the language of God’s supremacy. Let His kingship become your new distraction while the old ones shrink in the presence of Almighty God, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Let the focus of your life today shift from what feeds your flesh to being fully invested in the glory and majesty of God!

Reflection Questions:

  1. What are the main things you need to specifically declare God’s majesty over today?
  2. How does your mindset shift when you stop looking at your problems with earthly perspective and view them in light of the majesty of God? How small do problems look when you see them from God’s vantage point?
  3. What truth about God’s supremacy will you repeat over and over with a heart of prayer today?
